En fanfaaare! / With a Baaang!

A piece for 8 dancers and a part of the audience immersed on stage

I question our current times, when the world is crying out for urgent action, people’s cries are left unheard, and solidarity is weakened. I think of a youth that no longer knows what action to take or which path to follow, with bubbling energy that just wants to be anchored. And then I think of a marching band – a band that unites people, makes noise, bangs drums, and blows horns. A band whose spirit is to oppose, playing great songs, often too loudly, creating a made-up melody in several voices. A band that pulls us out of our inertia and pushes us to act collectively.

This performance would arrive with flair, like a boisterous serenade at dawn, rousing the world from its slumber. Picture a merry-go-round of bodies caught in a chain reaction of shared musical expressions, a medley of mumbled movements upon sudden awakening. Likely originating from a distant night, WITH A BAAANG! bursts forth into the iconic “Queen of the Night” aria from Mozart’s Magic Flute, sung in a whistled register. This rendition pierces the silence with its percussive and intensely expressive timing. Mouths agape, diaphragms engaged, the aria loops tirelessly, jolting bodies awake, making them cry, return to sleep, and awaken again. The bodies respond to each other like ricochets, with movements before sneezes, false alarms, pre-movements, and pre-jumps. These actions irresistibly lead to swaying, swinging, tossing, shaking, grounding themselves, quivering spines, and trembling in unison—a collective shiver in the early winter morning, when the mist still lingers.
