A F T E R
piece for 8 performers
The party sounds will have already become distant, submerged. This is A F T E R, the party’s depository, an old and slightly dirty memory of perspiring bodies, of a century of opulence, of climax, of overkill. It’s dancing, whatever the cost, in order to bury the old world, drunkenly destroy the theater, smashing and blasting its walls to open up a new space cluttered with debris. Exhausted bodies, stylish clothes turned moldy, daylight that turns the glamor of the night into a bitter and raw reality. To dream of the after is also to dream of a stripped body, maybe not on it’s own. A body that gets back up after the destruction of things. Only actions. Bodies that search. Growl. Climb. Roll. A flurry of gestures all as functional as another. Gestures returning to basics. A worker, athlete, peasant, no style, no frills. Raw dances, maybe even primitive. Is today’s dance capable of responding to the issues of this century? To imagine something else, to offer an alternative, an opening, a future other than the absurd antics of the primitive. The nostalgic return to our origins, to nature, to a reinvented biodiversity – What will the sound of the forest be in 2050? – And then there is idleness, decay, intertwined bodies, care, breath, time, bodies making love, all together.
